Laura Booiman-Jomes, MSc is a CBT Therapist at Psychological Health & Safety (PH&S) Clinic. Laura’s goal as a clinician is to create a compassionate and safe space for clients to express themselves while helping them reach their therapeutic goals. She does this by taking a client-centred and solution-focused approach to meet the unique needs of each client. Laura is experienced in working with adults with a variety of anxiety and mood disorders such as generalized anxiety, health anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorders, OCD spectrum disorders and depression. She also enjoys working with clients to enhance their interpersonal relationships, as well as supporting them through times of generalized stress or life transitions.
Laura strives to provide her clients with practical and effective strategies to manage and overcome their psychological symptoms while increasing their overall emotional resilience. Laura believes in using interventions that are supported by scientific research and primarily focuses on the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques to support her client’s needs. She also incorporates techniques from other evidence-based treatments such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Attachment Theory. Laura is passionate about diversity & inclusion and enjoys working with clients from an array of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. She is also experienced in working with individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. As someone who values community service, Laura has previously volunteered in rural Africa (Tanzania) working as a Human Rights & Women’s Empowerment Advocate; volunteered at a non-profit Therapeutic Equestrian Centre (STaRS) where she worked with those suffering from various physical, developmental, and cognitive challenges; and most recently volunteered as a certified Crisis Counsellor for Shout, the UK’s leading suicide crisis text line. Laura earned a Master’s of Science (MSc) in Psychology from the University of East London (UEL) and is an alumni of the University of British Columbia (UBC) where she completed her undergraduate studies (B.A.). In addition, Laura received specialized training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy through the University of Wilfred Laurier and is currently undergoing further advanced training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, through the DBT Centre of Vancouver. Laura is a graduate member with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and is a current member of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) and International Neuroscience Society (INS). With a passion for scientific research and all things related to psychological health & wellness, Laura intends on pursuing a doctorate degree to become a Registered Psychologist. Outside of the clinical practice, Laura enjoys leading an active lifestyle and can often be found walking her dog, running, golfing with her partner, and soaking up the beauty of nature. |
