Nicola Thackwell is a Registered Clinical Counsellor at Psychological Health & Safety (PH&S) Clinic and a facilitator at MyWorkplaceHealth. Nicola aims to work collaboratively with her clients to improve functioning while moving towards deeper perspectives and improved awareness of the self, and one’s relationships. She believes that therapy can help you deal with a difficult event or overcome recurring challenges in your life. While we all feel low, anxious, and stressed at times, the ways in which we perceive and manage difficulties can be explored and modified to bring about better coping and improved well-being.
Nicola is an integrative therapist, using a combination of approaches that provide her with a flexible and responsive toolbox of theory and practices to help you get the most out of your time in therapy. Some of these modalities include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Attachment Theory, and Existential Therapy. Nicola has experience helping clients with personal growth, life transitions (loss, grief, breakups and divorce, starting college), stress and burnout, depression and anxiety (including postpartum), relationship difficulties, acute and complex trauma, identity (gender, sexual orientation) and personality disorders. Having lived all over the world herself, Nicola has a special interest in immigration and the assimilation challenges that many people face. She is passionately committed to being an ally to those who find themselves in a minority group on the basis of race, culture, gender, and sexual orientation, and has published her research on the impact of structural racism and sexism in medical training. Nicola holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and Community Counselling and is registered with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors, as well as various regulatory bodies in France, the UK, and South Africa. As a South African, from Cape Town originally, Nicola enjoys camping, hiking, wood fires, and hot-weather holidays. She is a mom and loves the open-hearted, community spirit of Vancouver. |
